The hardest part of doing anything is often times the act of taking the first step. It’s launching. It’s actually committing to doing it.
It’s no different with disciple-making.
So, where do you start?
Well, I would suggest you begin with prayer. That is how Jesus started.
Luke 6:12-13 tells us, “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles…” (NIV)
Jesus spent all night praying. We might want to pray for much longer!
And what do we pray for?
Well, we can pray for God to put in our lives people of F.A.I.T.H. They may already be there, but we want to pray for God to draw them to us.
F.A.I.T.H. stands for:
- Faithful – Does the person demonstrate a faithfulness in following Christ?
- Available – Is this person available to participate in relationships and events that encourage spiritual growth and worship?
- Initiative – Does this person take initiative to grow, or do they only respond when asked?
- Teachable – Does this person demonstrate an openness to God and others for change, or do they resist learning?
- Heart – Does this person have a heart for God, talking openly about their love for the Lord?
(Taken from “Ways of the Alongside” by Bill Mowry)
So, the place to start is prayer. Pray for God to bring to mind people of F.A.I.T.H. God will do amazing things when we commit to living out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
